The Matrix: some movie tidbits

Here's a list of interesting items to keep track of in the outstanding movie 'The Matrix'. I will later post a detailed analysis of the film scene by scene, but for now, this will allow me to coalesce some of my thoughts (and other people's thoughts) into one repository.

Why am I posting this 3 years after the movie came out? Two reasons, primarily. First, the movie is definitely one of the most well-made movies I have seen (on many levels). Second, seeing the teaser-trailer for the next two movies has got me all wound up and ready to go! So without further ado, here are the tidbits (in no special order)...

  1. Neo's name is an anagram for one, as in The One.
  2. Neo's room number (seen when Choi and his crew visit him) is 101, again, as in The One.
  3. Neo's "real name" is Thomas A. Anderson. Biblical types on the net have mentioned that Anderson means "son of man" and that Thomas was a doubting diciple, just as Neo doubts that he is The One.
  4. The room Trinity is first seen in is 303. If you don't understand this one, you're clueless.
  5. Trinity always answers to comments from Neo such as "Jesus!" (in the S&M club) and "God!" (in the car on the way to the Oracle).
  6. Everything in the Matrix is tinted green. Everything in the real world is tinted blue.
  7. Neo and the Agents' suit jackets have a bright yellow lining. Why?
  8. Neo is not ushered into the Oracle's "inner sanctum" until he proves himself by manipulating the Matrix (bending the spoon).
  9. The earpiece the Agents wear is more than cosmetic. It is how they receive data from the mainframe. Remember that Agent Smith was out of the loop when interrogating Morpheus, after he took off his shades and removed his earpiece.
  10. Neo works for MetaCortex, a "respectable software company." Perhaps the code from his day job is actually used by the AI's when needed. After all, the source of innovation and new code will never be an AI.
  11. The sign inside Neo's office (when Morpheus is guiding him to the end of the hall) says Meta Cortechs. Two words and a different spelling. Perhaps the prop guys screwed up?
  12. The room Neo dies in at the end is the same one that Trinity starts off in. Hence, why Agent Smith knows where they are going.
  13. Cell phones can be used to track Resistence members in the Matrix. For example, after the street-market chase. Can agents track them also?
  14. When an agent is killed, he simply transfers to another person, while his unfortunate host is dead.
  15. An interesting point I just saw: when the agents take over a body, people in the Matrix probably don't see any change in the person, but only the hacked-in people do. This is perhaps not true, based on the reaction of the little girl in the bazaar when her mother is taken over. Also, where else would they get their sidearm?
  16. In the Agent training program, many real-life twins and triplets are used to create a "copy-and-paste" look to the scene. A special casting-call was put out for them
  17. The S&M club is inhabited by real people. A casting call was put out for them to come and bring their outfits and "toys."
  18. Neo's comment at the end (when he is resurrected and being shot at) is the word "No." This mirrors Agent Smith's dialogue in the government building when Neo starts up the Vulcan cannon.
  19. Cypher has been out for only 9 years, which must have meant he was pulled out around 28-32 or so. This ties into Morpheus' statement: "We don't free a mind once it's reached a certain age. The mind has trouble letting go. I've seen it before, and I'm sorry."
  20. Cypher is the only one who wears red in the Nebuchadnezzar. This shows the blood that is on his hands.
  21. The model of the hovercraft is Mark III, No. 11. The verse from the Bible, book of Mark, chapter 3 verse 11 says: ""
  22. The hovercraft was dedicated (on its nameplate) in 2069.
  23. The song playing in the Oracle's kitchen is "I'm Beginning to See the Light."
  24. The movie playing on TV in the Oracle's waiting room is "The Night of the Lepus."
  25. How does Morpheus know that Neo is capable of stopping bullets? Has he seen the first messiah doing that?
  26. If Morpheus is so sure Neo is the one, why is he so shocked at the end, when he stops the bullets?
  27. What was the deal with the helicopter explosion? Did Neo subconciously delay it long enough for Trinity to get away? As soon as he looks at the building and sees what he is doing, he stops believing and it explodes.
  28. Does Morpheus know what the Oracle told Trinity? He sure acts like it on the way to the Oracle and on the rooftop after his rescue.
  29. One of the martial arts Neo is taught is Drunken Boxing. This is probably a nod to Jackie Chan, from his film "The Legend of Drunken Master."
  30. After Neo's training, Tank tells Morpheus: "Over 10 hours straight. He's a machine!" Oh really?!
  31. Zion, the last human city is a biblical reference.
  32. Initially, Neo only manipulates the Matrix in self-defense or instinct, like dodging bullets on the rooftop or saving Trinity from the 'copter.
  33. An agent has never been destroyed before (by the reactions of Agents Jones and Agent Brown).
  34. Agent Brown and Jones' names are only given in the Closed-Captioning on the DVD.
  35. Morpheus is the strongest because his mind is the completely freed.
  36. All of Choi's dialogue at the beginning is foreshadowing: "You don't exist.", "You need to unplug, man!".
  37. Neo's monologue when stepping out of the window is foreshadowing: "I'm no one, I haven't done anything.", "I'm going to die.".
  38. The Oracle's room number is possibly C000. Some have mentioned that this relates to a portion of memory dedicated to BIOS overlay of Video Memory. This has major implications. More later.
  39. Cypher's name is Mr. Reagan. He wants to be reinserted into a power-plant and made to be someone important; someone famous, like an actor. He doesn't want to remember anything; NOTHING! Let's see, a famous actor who can't remember anything, with the name Reagan? Aha!
  40. Right after Cypher says "ignornace is bliss," at dinner, the harp sounds a glissando. Just like when people stereotype heavenly music. ;)
  41. The baby with the tubes going into it (in the growing fields segment) is animatronic. On seeing it, most people associated with the movie freaked out.
  42. The Sentinels ("squiddy") apparently seek based on starting location, energy signature, and sound.
  43. The hovercraft is quite large, possibly upwards of 60 feet long and 15 feet tall. Compare the scale of the Sentinels to the ship to see this.
  44. The phones used in the movie are Nokia 8110plus GSM phones. These were EXTREMELY advanced phones for 1999, and other than 3G phones out now, it is still quite an advanced phone. Also, it's OS is called Epoc. Hmm... sound like another of the crew?
  45. Neo's apartment number 101 may be a reference to the book 1984, in which the main character is tortured in a room with the number... 101. Perhaps this is his tortured existence in the Matrix.
  46. In the car (before he is debugged), Switch refers to Neo as 'copper-top' which is an allusion to Morpheus' explanation of the real world.
  47. The Australian corporation seen from the room where Morpheus is held is Mulpha, not Amulpha. You can look up the stock symbol in Australia for this one. Credits to Will Raresheid.
  48. more to come
